SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Saluki men's golf team turned in rounds of 301 and 293 Friday to hold a nine-shot lead after 36 holes at the 14-team GEICO Intercollegiate in Savannah, Ga.
Southern Illinois (594) leads Seton Hall and Yale, who are tied for second after recording 36-hole totals of 603, and Bryant University (607) and host team Ohio Wesleyan (609) stand in fourth and fifth after day one.
"We did pretty well today on a tough golf course, " said coach Leroy Newton. "The greens are small so we've gotten some good practice on chipping, but we're coming along and everyone is getting better."
Southern was backed by senior co-captain Todd Obergoenner who rebounded dramatically from an opening round 82, to fire a 7-under-par 65 in the afternoon to break the Hunter Golf Club course record.
"The morning was a struggle on the course's tricky greens," Obergoenner said. "The difference though, besides making some putts, was I was able to get everything up and down in the afternoon to save pars and keep my momentum."
Obergoenner's 65 was the second-lowest 18-hole round ever recorded in Saluki men's golf history.
Former two-time All-MVC standout Brian Norman set the single-round record during the 2004-05 season with a 64 at the Harris Fall Classic.
"Once we figured out the course we did much better," Obergoenner said. "Now we just have to approach tomorrow with the same mentality and finish strong."
Obergoenner is tied for second overall with junior Patrick Scheil who carded a 1-under-par 71 and 76 for a 36-hole total of 147.
In addition, senior co-captain John Danielson is tied for 12th after turning in a 150 (73-77), senior Phillip Collier is tied for 17th with a 152 (75-77), and junior Blake Driskell is tied for 46th with a 147 (82-75).
Junior Jordan Cox is also tied for sixth after carding rounds of 2-over 74 and 3-over 75, and senior Leighton Peavler is tied for 52nd with a 158 (84-74) as individual participants.
SIU will wrap up the GEICO Intercollegiate on Saturday with a final 18 holes at the par-72, 6,819-yard Hunter Golf Club.
