SAVANNAH, Ga. -The Saluki men's golf team won the GEICO Intercollegiate with a final-round 310 Saturday to beat Bryant University by seven strokes.
It was Southern's second win of the 2008-09 season and first since last fall's Wasioto Winds Fall Kick off in September.
"We didn't have the best day, but we set ourselves up yesterday to still win," said coach Leroy Newton. "The course was much more difficult in the last round, but coming away with a win will help."
The Salukis shot a 54-hole total of 904 to hold off Bryant University (911) and Seton Hall (912) who turned in final rounds of 304 and 309.
Appalachian State finished with a 916 for fourth and Yale had a 917 to round out the top five.
Junior Patrick Scheil carded a 77 and 54-hole total of 224 for a career-best third place to lead the Salukis.
Senior co-captain John Daneilson was close behind with a final-round team-best 4-over-par 76 to finish tied for sixth at 226.
Todd Obergoenner, the team's other senior co-captain, finished tied for 14th with a 228 (82-65-81), senior Phillip Collier placed tied for 23rd with a 231 (75-77-79) and Blake Driskell tied for 39th with a final-round 78 and three-round total of 235.
Junior Jordan Cox also took second overall as an individual participant after turning in a 2-over-par 74 and 54-hole total of 223, and SIU's other individual player, Senior Leighton Peavler, tied for 45th with a 237 (84-74-78).
The men's golf team will be off next week before taking part in the First Market Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. Monday and Tuesday, March 23-34.
