ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Jerry Mancuso had three RBI to support right-hander Zach Outman's complete game six-hit shutout, as Saint Louis University (28-24) beat Southern Illinois (20-26), 4-0, Tuesday night at the Billiken Sports Complex.
SIU, which played for the first time in nine days, saw its six-game winning streak against the Billikens come to an end.
Outman (3-5) struck out eight and walked two in his nine-inning gem, the first complete game of his career. Only eight runners reached base against him, with three making it into scoring position. SLU's defense also turned three double plays behind him.
The game was scoreless through four innings until Mancuso homered with two outs, giving the Billikens a 2-0 lead in the fifth.
Mancuso tacked on another run for SLU when his infield single scored Danny Brock with two outs in the seventh. The Billikens polished off their 4-0 win when Cody Cotter doubled, went to third on a fielder's choice and touched home on Ben Braaten's groundout to first.
Right-hander Daniel Etienne (3-1), who was one of seven Saluki pitchers to take the mound, suffered his first loss of the season. Etienne gave up two runs and two hits, walked one and recorded a strikeout in one inning.
SIU and SLU were even in the hits column with six apiece.
Mancuso did the most damage for the Billikens, going 2-for-2 with a run scored, home run and three RBI.
Chris Murphy, Mark Kelly, Michael Stalter, Chris Serritella, Aaron Roberts and Tony Lepore each had one hit for SIU.
SIU will close out its regular-season with a three-game series at Evansville, beginning Thursday at 6 p.m., CT. The Salukis need one win against the Purple Aces to earn a trip to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
