CARBONDALE, Ill. -Less than four weeks after being named academic all-district, senior men's golf co-captain Todd Obergoenner was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to conclude his outstanding season on and off the golf course.
The Men's At-Large program for the Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Obergoenner, who became the first Southern Illinois men's golfer to be chosen to one of the three Academic All-America teams last season, had a 4.0 in exercise science, was a MVC Scholar Athlete and tied for fourth at the State Farm MVC Championship to earn first team All-MVC honors.
"Todd (Obergoenner) had a great season and did a fantastic job academically," said coach Leroy Newton. "It's not easy being a student-athlete and I'm very proud of the way he represented the men's golf program in the classroom."
The Cape Girardeau, Mo. native concluded the season with a 74.4 stroke average, which ranked fifth in the entire MVC and eighth all-time in the program's history. He also tied for first place at the ASU Red Wolf Classic with his second-lowest 54-hole score of 211 (-5) and put his name in the Saluki record book with a 67 (-5) at the John Dallio Memorial, which ranked tied for fifth all-time for an 18-hole score.
Obergoenner led the team to one of the best all-around seasons in the program's history with three tournament victories and seven top-five finishes.
