CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki fans have been used to seeing Grey Dawg and Brown Dawg around campus and at athletic events. These two famous Salukis now have a new look and, for the first time, have animated likenesses that will be used by SIU for the Jr. Salukis club, children's merchandise and other university initiatives.
"We are very excited to unveil these new look mascots," said Mark Gazdik, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Director of Licensing. "With the addition of animated Grey and Brown Dawgs to our family of marks, we are now able to embrace our youngest Saluki fans with specialty marks just for them."
In addition to the new animated versions of the Dawgs, Saluki Athletics will unveil new mascot costumes for Grey and Brown Dawg at the August 27 football pre-season scrimmage. Kickoff for the scrimmage is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the unveiling prior to kickoff. The Dawgs will be available to meet and pose for pictures at the event.
The costumes, based on the new animated dawgs, were produced by Fiberworks in Phoenix, Arizona. Fiberworks produces mascots for small businesses, non-profit groups, Universities and several major league franchises; including the Houston Rockets, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Pistons, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Astros and Cincinnati Bengals.
