SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams returned to the pool for the first time in 2010, finishing second in a tri-meet at Missouri State Saturday afternoon.
SIU defeated Truman State but fell short of conference foe Missouri State. The Saluki men and women finished second and third, respectively, in the 400 medley relay to begin competition.
Kirsten Groome and El Badrawi dominated in the 1000 free, taking first and third place. Therese Mattsson and Matt Kruse recorded identical finishes in the 200 free. Mattsson also swam her way to a first-place finish in the 100 free at 51.86.
Cesar Perez and Jameson Kuper took third and fourth place for Southern in the 200 IM. Emily Gable followed up with top honors in the women's 1-meter dive.
SIU swept the 200 fly for both the men and women as both Groome and Matt Parsons captured first place finishes. Kyle Carevic also added points for SIU with second-place scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
In the last individual event, Kristin Geppert and Kuper took second in the 200 breast.
The Saluki relay teams finished third on the women's side and second on the men's side to round out the day's competition.
The Salukis have just two dual meets remaining before conference championships. SIU will travel to Western Kentucky Jan. 30 before hosting Evansville on Feb. 6.
