ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois sophomore thrower Jeneva McCall was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, Tuesday. This is the first such honor of her career.
McCall became the first Saluki this season to automatically qualify for the NCAA National meet, as she threw 70-00.25 (21.34m) to win the weight throw at Indiana's Gladstein Invitational, Jan. 23. Her mark is the third longest in SIU history and it beat the rest of the field by nearly three feet.
She also hit a NCAA provisional mark in the shot put with her throw of 52-09.25 (16.26m).
The Dolton, Ill. native has won 5-of-6 throwing events in the three meets she's competed in this indoor season. She will be put to test this coming weekend as the Salukis travel to Lexington, Ky. to compete in the Rod McCravy Invitational, Jan. 29-30.
Her automatic qualifying weight throw is the second longest registered in the nation this season. Louisville's D'Ana McCarty leads the country with her mark of 71-11.50 and her teammate, Jere' Summers, owns the third best overall throw of 67-11.00.
Both Louisville athletes along with McCall will be competing in Lexington. SIU's Gwen Berry, Rickael Roach and Sasha Leeth are ranked fourth through sixth, respectively, adding fire to the competition that will be in attendance at UK's Nutter Field House.
