Swimming and Diving opens season with victory over Vanderbilt

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team picked up its first dual win of the 2010-11 season Saturday afternoon, defeating Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt, 127-96 at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
SIU garnered 10 first-place finishes in its season-opening campaign, topping Vanderbilt for the second-straight season.
Saluki freshman came up big in the first relay event of the day, as Isabela Castro and Luisa Silveira joined Kristin Geppert and Kirsten Groome to take first place in the 400 medley relay. Kristy Hinkle, Colleen Joorfetz, Melissa Larocque and Rachael Barry took fourth.
Southern swept the top three spots in the 1000 free, courtesy of Kirsten Groome, Jennifer Kwok and Jill Weckbach.
Castro and Silveira each earned the first individual titles of their collegiate careers in the 200 free and 50 free. Castro also finished first in the 200 back while SIlveira took top honors in the 100 free as well.
Sophomores Jessica Anderson and Melissa Larocque finished third and fourth in the 200 IM.
Kwok and Weckbach took the first two spots in the 500 free, and Geppert went on to win the 200 breast.
In the diving events, Michelle Bell set a new career-best score in the 1-meter at 242.25.
Southern Illinois will return to the pool next Saturday, Oct. 16, when it hosts Kentucky and Missouri for a tri-meet beginning at 2 p.m.
