PARIS, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team placed seventh at the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Tuesday.
The tournament took place at the 6,685-yard, par-72 Paris Landing Golf Club, which is part of the Tennessee Golf Trail and one of the signature courses of the Tennessee State Park system.
As a team, the Salukis shot a first round of 297 and a 293 in both the second and third round for an overall score of 883, just three strokes out of the top-five.
Freshman George Tate shined on the course for Southern. He led the team in just his second tournament with an overall score of 215 (-1), placing him in a tie for 13th with Cameron Carrico of Murray State.
"Tate played extremely well, he really proved that he is a collegiate golfer," said SIU head coach Leroy Newton.
Each Saluki carded all three rounds in the 70's. Brandon Cauldwell finished 33rd overall with a final score of 221 (+5).
Jake Erickson and David Griffin each had a score of 225 after 54 holes. Joe Goelzhauser finished out the line up for the Salukis with a score totaling 230.
"Each of the guys worked really hard, we played excellent golf and enjoyed the course. Overall, we had a great tournament and feel prepared for the spring season," Newton said.
Central Arkansas won the tournament for the fourth consecutive year in the four-year old tournament with a three round score of 842.
The Salukis will close out their fall schedule when they travel to Edwardsville, Ill. on Oct. 25-26 to compete at the SIUE Invitational.
