Pre-game Notes

There was a 23 mph head wind coming from the North at the start of the game.
First Quarter
Chance Coda and Korey Lindsey made their 30th consecutive starts Saturday.
Three freshmen started on defense for the Salukis (NT Derrick Nsubuga, FS E.J. Clark and SS Luke Thuston). Thuston made his first career start.
Tyler Graves made his first career start at right tackle. SIU's first scoring drive went 77 yard on 10 plays and used 4:36. SIU rushed seven times for 55 yards and Chris Dieker was 3-for-3 for 27 yards on the drive. SIU had one five-yard penalty on the drive. It was Dieker's second rushing touchdown of the season and the eighth of his career.
Chance Coda sacked Matt Brown and forced a fumble inside the Redbird one-yard line on a third-and-13. It was Coda's second sack on the year.
Kyle Dougherty's 23-yard field goal at 3:06 was the 51st of his career, which set a new school record.
Thuston blocked his second punt in as many weeks and he returned this one eight yards for a touchdown. It was the first blocked punt returned for a touchdown that Illinois State has given up since Southern Illinois did so in 2001. Jason Newell also returned that blocked punt five yards for a TD.
Illinois State only had 36 yards of offense in the first quarter.
SIU's 17 first-quarter points are the most its scored in the first quarter of a game this year.
Second Quarter
SIU went over 100 yards rushing as a team on its 15th carry of the game.
Allaria's third catch of the game at 3:50 was the 109th of his career and it moved him into sixth place for the most receptions in school history.
Dieker was intercepted twice in the second quarter, giving SIU five turnovers in the second quarter of its last two games.
Nick King set a new career-high with the five tackles he had in the first half. His previous personal best in a game in three at Illinois on Sept. 11.
Third Quarter
Joe Allaria returned the kickoff 44-yards to start the third quarter.
Thuston recovered his first career fumble at the Redbird 16-yard line.
Paul McIntosh rushed for one yard on a fourth-and-1 at the SIU 30 with 2:35 left in the quarter. It was Southern's fourth successful conversion on a fourth down in as many tires.
Illinois State blocked a Austin Pucylowski punt with 17.9 second left before the end of the quarter and returned it yards for a touchdown. It was the first blocked punt returned for a touchdown against SIU since New Hampshire did so in the first round of the 2008 playoffs.
Fourth Quarter
Shariff Harris' 16-yard gain on the first play of the fourth quarter gave him 101 yards rushing in the game. It came on his 25th carry and is the second 100-yard rushing game by a Saluki this year. Lucien Walker had 114 yards in the season opener against Quincy.
Dieker's 33-yard rush early in the quarter is the longest of his career.
