Pre-game Notes
SIU Captains: 5, 14, 21, 47
First Quarter
Sammy Biggs returned the games opening kickoff 41 yards to the SIU 45-yard line.
Joe Allaria's eight-yard reception on SIU's first drive of the game gave him a catch in 26 consecutive games.
E.J. Clark forced a fumble on UNI's first drive of the game and Jayson DiManche returned it 26-yards to the Panther 8-yard line.
Kyle Dougherty hit his 52nd career field goal at 6:15.
Jeff Evans scored his second touchdown of the season on a 66-yard pass from Paul McIntosh. He fumbled at the nine, but recovered in the end zone for the TD.
The two teams combined for 266 yards of total offense in the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Evans went over 100 yards receiving on his second catch of the game. He had the 66 yarder in the first quarter and a 52-yarder early in the second quarter to give him 118 yards receiving in the first 20 minutes of the game. It is his second career 100-yard receiving game (both this year).
Paul McIntosh ran for his first touchdown of the season at 10:47. It came from 20-yards out.
Luke Thuston intercepted the first pass of his career and returned it 36-yards for a touchdown. It was SIU's first defensive touchdown of the season, and it's eighth interception returned for a TD in three years under head coach Dale Lennon.
Terrell Wilson intercepted his first career pass at 0:54 off a Zach Davis pass.
Chris Dieker was 9-for-11 for 162 yards and one touchdown in the first half. As a team, SIU had 228 yards passing in the first half (McIntosh had 66 yards on one pass).
Third Quarter
Southern Illinois had a punt blocked for the third consecutive game. UNI's Jordan Smith blocked this one to give the Panthers the ball at the SIU 14-yard line at 9:52.
Fourth Quarter
Robert Spann intercepted the first pass of his career at 14:54. It was the fourth turnover the Saluki defense created on the day (three interceptions).
Jason Seaman recorded his first sack since the season opener at 5:38, to push UNI back six yards. They then faced a third-and-goal at the 28-yard line and eventually had to settle for a 44-yard Billy Hallgren field goal, which was UNI's final points in the game.
Overtime
This was SIU's first overtime game since 2008, when they won 17-10 at Illinois State on Nov. 22.
Final Notes
SIU improves to 4-3 all-time in overtime victories.
The win was Southern's ninth in a row on Homecoming and the Salukis have now won 13-straight home games in league play. Southern is 23-2 in home MVFC games since 2003.
