ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Ashley Shells, compliance coordinator at SIU, was recently awarded the MVC Diversity Grant to participate in a NCAA Leadership Symposium on Jan 11-12, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas
The grant for $1,000 is to be used toward registration and expenses.
"I'm very excited to be named the recipient of the MVC Diversity Grant. This is a great honor and privilege and a great opportunity to expand my networking tree with other young professional women within intercollegiate athletics while enhancing my leadership potential, intellectual and organizational skills to become a more productive worker in the field of sport administration," Shells said.
The NCAA Women's Leadership Symposium is designed as an educational experience for professional women new to working in intercollegiate athletics administration and coaching, and students aspiring to a career in college athletics.
The NCAA Women's Leadership Symposiums are held regionally and were started by the Horizon League in 2001.
Shells is in her third season working with the compliance office at SIU and is in her first year serving as Compliance Coordinator with the NCAA.
Shells started working with Saluki Athletics in August of 2008, as a volunteer in the compliance office while she started working toward her master's degree in kinesiology, specializing in sport administration.
She was an intern in the compliance office in the spring of 2009 before filling the role of graduate assistant in the financial aid/compliance office for the 2009-10 academic year.
Shells was a four-year team captain on the Claflin University volleyball team located in Orangeburg, S.C. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Claflin in 2008 with her Bachelor's of Science degree in sport management and received her master's degree from SIU in May.
