ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois senior sprinter Sammy Biggs has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
The honor comes after Biggs provisionally qualified in the 400-meter dash at the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Feb. 12.
Biggs won the men's 400-meter invite by nearly a full second, as he beat Michigan's Carl Buchanon to record his fastest time of the season. That time of 47.37 is the fastest clocked in the event in the Missouri Valley Conference this year.
He went on to lead the 4x400 relay team to a third place finish on Feb. 13. Running the anchor leg, SIU's team led by Biggs hit the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the first time all year by finishing in a time of 3:12.12, which was nearly six seconds faster than any other Saluki relay team has recorded this indoor season.
Biggs becomes the second Saluki to earn the male track athlete of the week award this year. Sophomore sprinter Brandon Deloney first picked up the honor on Jan. 19.
