CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's and women's track and field teams completed its competition at the EIU Friday Night Special at the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse. Meredith Hayes and Gwen Berry both won events Friday and J.C. Lambert won two events on the day.
Friday's meet was the final tune-up for the Salukis before the Missouri Valley Championships, Feb. 27-28, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Lambert took first in the weight throw and in the shot put, where he recorded a NCAA provisional mark for the first time this season. His throw of 58-09.50 was a new personal record for the sophomore and is the eighth furthest in SIU history.
Following Lambert's lead, the rest of the Saluki men throwers performed well in both events. SIU had four of the top 10 finishers in the men's weight throw and four of the top five in the shot put.
Gwen Berry also hit the NCAA provisional mark in the shot put. This was the second weekend in a row in which she won the event, doing so for the second-straight week with a new personal record. She threw 53-05.75 on Friday, which was almost two feet further than her winning mark from last weekend.
The women's weight throws also had four of the top 10 finishers, with Sasha Leeth (second - 65-04.25) leading the way.
In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Hayes took first and again, SIU had four of the top five finishers. Hayes crossed the finish line in a time of 8.52 and was followed by Terri Counts, Miracle Thompson and Laquitsha Bejoile in third, fourth and fifth place.
