LUBBOCK, Texas - Southern Illinois sophomore first baseman Chris Serritella was named to the College Baseball Foundation and Diamond Sports "National All-Star Lineup" on Wednesday for his performance in the Jacksonville State series, Feb. 26-28.
Serritella, a 6-3 left-handed hitter from Glenview, Ill, led the Salukis to their first series victory of the season and did so with a 1.267 slugging percentage over the weekend. He had seven hits, scored seven runs, had nine RBIs, hit three doubles and three home runs in the series at Jacksonville State.
Serritella tied the SIU school record by hitting three doubles in the 18-15 victory on Sunday. He also hit two home runs in the series finale, scored four runs and had six RBIs, which is more than any Saluki had in a game during the 2009 season.
He did not strikeout once in his 15 at-bats and drew three walks, all in the series opener on Friday, Feb. 26. Serritella hit his first homer of the season in the first game of the series, which was a two-run shot in the first inning.
Returning as the top hitter from the 2009 squad, Serritella is batting .370 this season and leads the team in home runs (four) and RBIs (11). Opposing pitchers have walked him eight times already this season and he has struck out just two times in 27 at-bats.
Southern Illinois (2-5) looks to snap a two game losing streak this weekend when they host Purdue for a three-game series at Abe Martin Field. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. Admission to all Saluki baseball games is free.
