CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois softball team is set for its home-opener this weekend as the Salukis host the annual Coach B Classic, March 6-7, at Charlotte West Stadium.
The Kay Brechtelsbauer Southern Classic began in 1992, and is named in honor of longtime Saluki coach, Kay Brechtelsbauer, who coached from the team's origination in 1968 until her retirement in 1999. During that time she amassed an amazing 633-438-2 record, taking the Salukis to the College World Series four times (`70, `71, `77, `78), and to the NCAA Regionals once (`91). This is the sixth year in a row the Salukis have hosted the Southern Classic and SIU holds a 38-14 all-time record in the tournament.
