Quick Hits
After snapping a five-game losing streak with a 8-7 win on Wednesday over Murray State, the Southern Illinois baseball team looks to ignite a winning streak when they host Indiana State for a three-game series at Abe Martin Field, April 23-25.
Fans can listen to all three games on the Saluki Radio Network with "Voice of the Salukis" Mike Reis delivering the hardball action on WFRX 1300-AM. Fans can also listen to the games on the Internet through Saluki All-Access at www.SIUSalukis.com, where live stats are also available.
This series matches up the top-two hitting teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. Indiana State has a Valley-best .315 team batting average, but SIU's 429 hits are 39 more than Indiana State has, as the Sycamores sit in second place in that category.
SIU's scheduled starters for Saturday and Sunday's games, Nathan Forer and Randy Hoelscher, have a combined 2.37 ERA since March 27 (both have made four starts since then). Forer ranks No. 4 nationally with his 1.23 ERA this year. The Salukis have won 10 of their last 14 games against Indiana State in Carbondale. SIU leads the all-time series 87-65.
Southern Illinois has nine remaining Missouri Valley Conference games on its 2010 schedule. Last year, the Salukis won eight of their final nine to finish with a 11-9 league record. SIU is currently tied for fifth in the league standings with Creighton with a 5-7 conference record.
Sophomore Chris Serritella enters the Indiana State series with a nine-game hitting streak, junior Chris Murphy has an eight-game hitting streak and senior Michael Stalter has hit safely in five consecutive games. Murphy has at least one hit in 18 out of the last 19 games and has nine doubles in that stretch.
The three games this weekend close out a stretch for Southern Illinois where they will have played eight games in 10 days.
