Ugly second inning leads to Baseball's 14-4 loss

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Indiana State had 12 runs and 13 hits -- in the second inning alone -- as they trampled the Southern Illinois baseball team, 14-4, in seven innings on Friday at Abe Martin Field.
This is the first time Southern has been run-ruled in league place since they lost 10-0 at Creighton on March 29, 2009. SIU falls to 17-22 on the year and 5-8 in Missouri Valley Conference play while the Sycamores improve to 25-11 and 6-4 in the Valley.
I don't think I've ever seen 13 hits in one inning," head coach Dan Callahan said. "Outside of the second, which was absolutely dreadful, we held our own. There aren't a ton of positives, but we did have some good at-bats and that's one way to look at it."
Indiana State sent 17 batters to the plate in that second inning, 14 of them reached base and they had 13 hits. Every batter in the Sycamore order had at least one hit and scored at least one in the inning and five different hitters had two hits.
Saluki starter Jimmy Cornell (1-3) drew the loss Friday, as he was one of three pitchers used in that second inning.
ISU right-handed pitcher Jacob Petricka (6-4) yielded nine hits and four runs to earn his sixth win on the year. He struck out nine batters in his six innings of work.
The bright spot in Friday's game was the performance of the heart of the Saluki batting order. Sophomore Chris Serritella went 3-for-4 and drove in two of SIU's four runs in the game. Senior catcher Tyler Bullock was 2-for-4 with a RBI double.
Indiana State finished the game with 18 hits and six different Sycamores had two or more hits.
Southern Illinois looks to have a short memory as game two of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
