COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Southern Illinois track and field teams wrapped up the first day of competition at the Jesse Owens Track Classic hosted by Ohio State. The Salukis recorded 11 top-10 finishes in 12 events, facing some of the top competition in the country, up against several top-25 teams at the meet.
Sophomore pole vaulter Cody Doerflein won his fifth meet title in six weeks, clearing 16-06.75 (5.05m) for the win. In the javelin throw, Trevor Poore finished fifth with a best heave of 190-05 (58.05m).
In the men's hammer throw, J.C. Lambert was the Salukis' top finisher, 13th at 196-09 (59.98m). Teammates Collin Otto (180-09; 55.10m), Ryan Shumaker (179-04; 54.66m) and Joe Paradiso (176-03; 53.72m) finished 30th, 32nd and 33rd respectively.
Mohamed Mohamed was the top finisher in the running events for the men, coming in fourth in the 5,000-meter run in 14:21.87. Daniel Dunbar finished sixth in 14:28.92, while Neal Anderson (14:58.63) and Kyle Kirchner (15:00.85) came in 20th and 22nd.
Jason Ordway ran 9:06.53 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish 14th and Lucas Cherry came in 18th in 9:20.52. In the 1500, Zach Dahleen (3:53.18) and Greg McBride (3:58.39) came in 25th and 39th.
On the women's side, the women took four of the top seven spots in the hammer throw led by Jeneva McCall with the second-best throw in SIU program history, surpassing her career-best by over 10 feet. The sophomore threw 207-11 (63.37m) to finish third among some of the best in the country.
Gwen Berry finished fourth at 203-01 (61.90m), with Sasha Leeth (196-08; 59.95m) and Olga Ciura (188-08; 57.50m) in sixth and seventh. Freshman Kim Fortney came in 16th at (174-04; 53.15m).
In the women's pole vault, Miracle Thompson finished third clearing 12-07.50 (3.85m). Toni Whitfield was the Salukis top finisher in the women's javelin throwing Javelin 142-03 (43.35m) to finish fifth. Fortney (115-02; 35.10m) and Katie Wagner (114-01; 34.77m) finished 15th and 17th.
Turning to running events, Emily Toenies picked up the top finish of the night with a mark of 17:24.16 to finish fifth in the 5,000-meter run. Ryan Eichelberger ran 18:13.25 for 18th. Megan Hoelscher finished 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:02.10 and Jamie Pfister ran 4:43.04 for 29th in the 1,500-meter run.
