CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois women's basketball coach Missy Tiber signed Charnise Mitchell for the 2010-11 season. On Thursday, Tiber announced that the junior college transfer from Northwest Shoals Community College has signed a letter of intent to play for SIU.
Mitchell, a 6-1 forward from Florence, Ala., was named to the Alabama Community College Conference Northern First Team as a sophomore, averaging 11.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest, shooting 45 percent from the field in 29 games. She was also picked Second-Team All-Region 22 and named to the ACCC All-Tournament Team and the ACCC All-Star Game.
As a freshman, Mitchell averaged 7.7 points and 6.3 boards, shooting 58 percent from the field in 18 games at Northeast Mississippi Community College. She played one season with current Saluki Eboni Crayton.
"Charnise is a great athlete and runs the court extremely well," Tiber said. "She brings a high energy level and will be the first player down the court on every possession. We were in a fight until the end to get Charnise, and I can't tell you how excited we are to have her join us here at SIU."
Mitchell will join fellow transfer Rani Brandon and incoming freshmen Sidney Goins, Taylor Ignoto, Brooke LeMar, Raquel Miller, Olivia Patterson, CiCi Shannon and Jordyn Courier as members of the 2010-11 class.
"Our goal in the late signing period was to address post depth and experience," Tiber added. "I think our staff has done a great job of that with the signing of Brandon and Mitchell."
