ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois senior right-handed pitcher Nathan Forer has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
This is the first career pitcher of the week award for the Brampton, Ontario, Canada native and the first received by a Saluki pitcher since Shawn Joy on April 21, 2008.
Forer pitched his second game this season allowing no earned runs, as he picked up his first win of the year when he threw eight innings against Bradley. He allowed just six hits in the 3-1 victory over the Braves on Saturday, April 3. Forer struck out four batters and only walked two of the 30 he faced.
His eight innings thrown are the most by anyone on the Saluki pitching staff that has recently been dominating opponents and has a 2.18 team ERA in league play. Forer's strong outing lowered his already miniscule ERA down to 0.74 this year and in his three starts, he has only allowed one earned run.
Forer and the Salukis have won five-straight games for the first time since 2008. Southern Illinois looks to extend its winning streak to six games when they play at Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. SIU then heads to league-leading Wichita State for a three-game series, April 9-11.
