Southern Illinois' record is above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2008 when they finished the year with a 34-23 record. SIU has won six-straight games and eight out of its last 10 to rebound from a slow start.
Senior right-handed pitcher Nathan Forer was named the MVC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. He yielded just six hits and no earned runs in eight innings of work to pick up his first win of the year last Saturday against Bradley. He has a 0.74 ERA in six appearances and three starts.
Wichita State has won eight out of the last nine in the series with the Salukis, but SIU did take 2-of-3 games in Wichita during the 2006 meeting. The two teams did not play one another last year, as the inland hurricane that swept across Southern Illinois wiped out the entire series that was scheduled in early May. Wichita State leads the all-time series 86-29.
Junior center fielder Chris Murphy carries a 10-game hitting streak with him heading into the weekend. He has also hit six doubles in the last nine games.
The SIU pitching staff has not allowed more than four runs in its first six conference games and sports a 2.18 ERA in league play.
Friday's game will be the 2,800th in Saluki Baseball history. The Dawgs have a 1679-1109-11 all-time record that stems back to 1923, although SIU didn't start playing baseball annually until 1947.
The weekend series is part of an eight-game road swing for the Salukis.
