CARBONDALE, Ill. - Former Saluki guard Christine Presswood has signed with the Jacksonville Surf of the Womens United States Basketball Association (WUSBA) new minor division basketball league announced in early April.
The WUSBA has twelve teams divided into two divisions, spread over nine southern states. The WUSBA owns and operates all teams. Each team operates independently of each other. According to the WUSBA website, the league considers the league the Triple AAA women's league in the U.S., just under the WNBA.
"I'm looking forward to the exposure and getting the opportunity to play in the U.S," Presswood said. "If I do well in this league I can only further my career. I can't wait to get on the court with other players that want it. It's great to get paid to do what you love."
The Appalachian consist of the Atlanta Platinum, the Augusta Raging River, the Birmingham Starz, the Louisville Storm, the West Virginia Capitals and the Chattanooga Royal. The Atlantic will be comprised of the Charleston Cadets, the Charlotte Blue Wave, the Columbia Breeze, the Richmond Blaze, the Savannah Seahawks and the Jacksonville Surf.
The WUSBA 2010 regular basketball season runs from June 5, 2010 to August 28, 2010. Each team plays a 28 game schedule, 14 home and 14 away. The league has a mid season All Star Game scheduled for the third week of July. The WUSBA Championship Playoff series begins August 30, 2010 with the championship game on September 5, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia.
"Christine is a hard worker who isn't ready for her playing career it to be over," Saluki head coach Missy Tiber said. "Fortunately for her, she has the skills and abilities to go a step forward and continue playing. Our entire SIU coaching staff is very proud of Christine and want nothing more than to see pursue her dream. We wish her the best."
