Track and Field sends seven athletes to NCAA National Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - The Southern Illinois track and field teams will take seven athletes to the NCAA National Championships following competition at the three-day West Regional hosted by Texas.

The Salukis will compete in six events at the national meet June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore., led by Jeneva McCall who will compete in three events. Cody Doerflein (pole vault), Jake Deiters (discus), J.C. Lambert (men's hammer), Sasha Leeth (women's hammer), Gwen Berry (women's hammer) and Olga Ciura (women's hammer) will also compete at nationals.

McCall won the women's hammer throw Saturday with a career-best toss of 210-04 (64.12m) after advancing to Nationals in the shot put Thursday and discus Friday.

The Salukis dominated the women's hammer taking four of the top five positions in the West Region. Gwen Berry threw 203-07 (62.05m) for third, Olga Ciura finished fourth at 197-08 (60.26m) and Sasha Leeth came in fifth with a toss of 197-06 (60.21m). Rickael Roach also finished 19th with a toss of 184-00 (56.09m).

Jake Deiters advanced in the men's discus finishing seventh with a toss of 186-10 (56.96m).

Malaikah Love took her top finish of the weekend in the women's triple jump with a leap of 40-09.50 (12.43m) for 27th. She also finished 39th in the long jump with a final mark of 19-01.25 (5.82m).

In the women's high jump, Kasey Oceguera cleared 5-04.50 (1.64m) for 41st.

In the quarterfinal rounds of the women's 100-meter hurdles and the men's 200-meter dash, Meredith Hayes ran 13.63 for 20th and Brandon Deloney ran 21.81 for 24th respectively.

Daniel Dunbar finished 26th in the semi-finals of the 5,000-meter run in 14:36.38.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Tess Shubert, Kendra Deck, Tredene Davis and Kandise Thompson finished 17th in 3:39.34.
