MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee scored in five consecutive innings to race past the Southern Illinois baseball team, as the Salukis fell 14-11 on Friday at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The loss ends SIU's six-game winning streak and the Dawgs fall back to 23-23 on the year. Middle Tennessee ends a three-game losing streak to improve to 27-18 overall.
Between the bottom of the third and the end of the seventh the two teams combined for 25 runs and 22 hits. There were four lead changes in that time and two ties. Middle Tennessee came out of the madness with a 14-11 lead.
Saluki freshman reliever Aaron Snyder got Middle Tennessee to go three-up and three-down in the bottom of the eight. That was their first scoreless inning since the second and it kept SIU within striking distance, as the top of its order was due up in the ninth.
However, Southern Illinois went three-up and three-down in the ninth to end the high-scoring affair.
Saluki starter Nathan Forer only lasted 3.1 innings; his shortest outing of the year. He walked six batters, gave up six hits and seven runs. He did not receive the decision, as Southern came back to tie the game in the fifth and sixth innings.
Senior Ryan Bradley (0-4) drew the loss in the game where he threw two innings. Blue Raider reliever Daniel Palo registered the win, improving to 1-1 on the year.
The Salukis were led offensively by junior Blake Pinnon and senior Michael Stalter, who both went 3-for-5 at the plate. Pinnon scored a team-high three runs and Stalter was one of three Salukis with two RBIs on the day.
Left fielder Nick Johnson drove in a pair of runs on his double, which was one of the five that SIU hit in the game. First baseman Chris Serritella went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double. He pushed his hitting streak up to 17 games.
Middle Tennessee's Bryce Brentz drove in three runs off of two hits, one of which was a home run. First baseman Blake McDade hit the other Blue Raider homer in the game. He was 2-for-2 on the day with four runs scored, two driven in and he walked three times.
The two teams combined to walk 14 batters in the game and each team had 13 hits.
Southern Illinois looks to bounce back on Saturday behind junior left-handed pitcher Randy Hoelscher, who is 3-0 in his last five starts. First pitch for game two of the series is set for 4 p.m.
