CARBONDALE, Ill. - Former Southern Illinois University catcher/designated hitter Tyler Bullock signed a contract to play with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League on Tuesday.
Bullock, who played at SIU from 2008-10, joined the Miners prior to their Tuesday game against Traverse City and was in the starting lineup that night. Bullock crushed a solo home run over the right-field billboards in his first official at-bat following a walk in his first plate appearance. He finished the game with that home run and a pair of walks.
The DuQuoin, Ill. native joins three other former Salukis on the Miners' roster. Shortstop Michael Stalter, who singed with the club on June 15, was a senior classmate of Bullock's on the 2010 Saluki team. Pitcher Shawn Joy (2007-08) and catcher Mark Kelly (2006-09) are both in their first season with the Miners.
Bullock was a first team All-Missouri Valley Conference designated hitter as a junior for the Salukis in 2009. He rounded out his career this past spring as SIU's second-leading home run hitter of all-time, as he belted 31 homers in three seasons. Bullock joined Robert Jones (1984-86), as the only players in school history to lead the team in home runs three-straight seasons.
