CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois head women's basketball coach Missy Tiber announces Bett Shelby as a new assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Tuesday.
"I am very pleased to have Bett join our women's basketball program here at SIU," Tiber said. "She brings a true passion for recruiting and adds a new excitement level to our staff. Coach Shelby is one of the best young recruiting coordinators in the profession. Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the job allows her to be a great recruiter."
Shelby, a native of Charlotte, N.C., was assistant coach at Tennessee Tech last season where she coordinated all aspects of recruiting. At TTU, she was responsible for an All-Star Girls Report Top-100 recruiting class, ranking No. 1 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
"I am so thrilled that Coach Tiber has given me the opportunity to be apart of SIU women's basketball," Shelby said. "It is an exciting experience to work and recruit in the Missouri Valley Conference. With Coach Tiber, our facilities, and the unconditional support we receive from our athletic department we have all the tools necessary to become an elite program."
Prior to her stint at TTU, she spent one season as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Stetson University helping recruit a Top-100 recruiting class according to All-Star Girls Report, which ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
She also spent two years as the director of basketball operations on the East Carolina coaching staff. During Shelby's time at ECU, the Pirates won the Conference USA Championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years. She also coordinated the first team camp at ECU.
Shelby spent her first year at the collegiate level as a team manager for coach Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee. She transferred to UNC Wilmington and played two seasons, the team recording a 22-6 record in her first season. She played her junior and senior seasons at Greensboro College, serving as team captain. The team won USA South regular-season and conference titles. Her senior season, the team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 22-8 record.
She earned a bachelor of science degree in sports and exercise studies with a concentration in coaching from Greensboro College and is currently working toward a master's degree in sports management.
"Bett hit the ground running and has been non-stop since her arrival in Carbondale," Tiber added. "With our Saluki Way facilities and Bett's commitment to hard work, I am confident that we will attract outstanding student-athletes."
