CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois senior safety Mike McElroy is going to miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury that was sustained in a loss at Illinois on Sept. 11.
McElroy will undergo surgery on his ankle. Southern Illinois will apply for a medical redshirt season for McElroy, who has not taken a redshirt year. In order to obtain a medical redshirt under NCAA rules, a player must have played in less than 30 percent of the teams' games and that 30 percent must have come in the first half of the season. McElroy qualifies under both specifications.
He is the third starter in SIU's defensive backfield that has been lost for the season with an injury. Free safety Rashad Graham was lost with a knee injury right before fall camp and cornerback James McFadden went down in fall camp, also with a knee injury.
McElroy entered the year as a preseason All-American and a candidate for the Buck Buchanan award that goes to the most outstanding defensive player in the FCS. His seven interceptions in 2009 led the Missouri Valley Football Conference and tied for the fourth most in the nation.
