CARBONDALE, Ill. - Former Saluki baseball player Jerry Hairston, Jr. has shined for the Milwaukee Brewers in this year's Major League Baseball Playoffs. Hairston, Jr. has hit .375 with five doubles while starting at third base in all nine of the Brewers postseason games this year. He hit .375 with three RBIs in the Brewers first round series against Arizona.
Currently in his 14th MLB season, Hairston, Jr. was traded to Milwaukee on July 30 after signing with the Washington Nationals this past offseason. He was also a member of the 2009 World Series Champion New York Yankees.
"It's great to see Jerry back in the postseason and especially playing so well," SIU Baseball Coach Ken Henderson said. "He has been a very good and loyal alumnus, and we are all extremely proud of his accomplishments."
While at SIU, Hairston, Jr. was voted Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 1996 and selected to the MVC All-Tournament team in 1996 and 1997. He was an 11th round pick of the Baltimore Orioles following his sophomore season. In January of 2009 he was inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame.
