Golf finishes in third at D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate

NORMAL, Ill - The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished in third place at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Sunday. SIU finished first among six Missouri Valley Conference schools that competed in the event. Junior Brandon Cauldwell tied for third overall with a 213. Cauldwell's score is 17 strokes better than his previous career best on a Par 71 course.
"I was proud of the way we competed out there. We just played fantastic." head coach Leroy Newton said. "We played our best golf in the last two rounds, which you always like to see. Brandon and Jake led us, which is why we made them captains, and Joe Goelzhauser is really playing some good golf for us. We just need to keep improving each tournament."
Jake Erickson rebounded from an openeing-round 83 to fire 68-72 in the final two rounds to finish tied for 17th overall. Joe Goelzhauser finished tied for 40th overall with a 229. Jeffrey Miller and George Tate rounded out the team, both shooting a 231 to tie for 54th overall.
The finish marks a 10-place and 57-stroke improvement over the same event last year, when the Salukis finished 13th of 18 teams. SIU continues to show dramatic improvement over last year. In the season opening Wasioto Winds Fall Kick Off, the team shot 20 strokes better than the same event last year. The following week, the Salukis improved seven places from last year's finish in the UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
Illinois won the tournament by 23 strokes. Akron finished in second, ten strokes ahead of SIU. Illinois' Luke Guthre won the tournament by four strokes over teammate Thomas Pieters.
Next, the Salukis head to Paris, Tenn., for the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Oct. 10-11.
