CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU baseball team's locker room has been renovated with the addition of 34 new wooden lockers along with 34 padded stools featuring the Salukis logo. A portion of the renovation was funded by the Dan Callahan Memorial Fund. The fund honors former SIU baseball coach Dan Callahan, who led the team for 16 years before passing from a rare form of skin cancer on Nov. 15, 2010.
"The locker room is now a first class facility," Coach Ken Henderson said. "It's an area our players can be proud of and one which is befitting of a major college program. We are thankful to all of the people who made the renovation a reality, including our administrators Mario Moccia, Jason King and Mark Scally. This would not have been possible without the caring people who gave to the Coach Callahan Memorial Fund, and we would especially like to thank Stacy Callahan for giving her blessing to the project."
This marks the first renovation to the clubhouse since it was constructed prior to the 1988 season. The new lockers are the first step in a planned $5 million Abe Martin Field renovation project, which is scheduled to take place over the next few years.
"It's a huge step forward for the program and a sign of things to come," junior pitcher Cody Forsythe said of the new lockers. "All the players are excited, all the new guys and the old guys. It's a big help for the program."
