CARBONDALE, Ill. - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished competition at the Miami of Ohio Invitational on Saturday. The men finished third and the women finished sixth in the invitational, which was the last event of the fall semester.
"I'm really, really pleased with our team," head coach Rick Walker said. "Our team has been working hard, and most of those other teams were fully rested. But our team just kept getting after it and kept stepping up."
The men's team finished third out of eight teams, and the women finished sixth.
"We were honestly not concerned with the team score," Walker said. "It's nice to have a good team score, but we had maybe half the swimmers of some of the teams, and we weren't as rested. So to finish as good as we did, we're pleased that."
Justin Wolfe won the 100 butterfly and set NCAA qualifying times in the 100 fly and 50 freestyle. Steve Wood finished second in three events, the 200 IM, 400 IM and 100 breaststroke.
"Justin continues to lead us. He swam very well," Walker said. "Steve had some incredible swims for us. It was a great invitational for him against some stiff competition."
On the women's side, freshman Hannah Pinion posted a pair of top-15 finishes to lead the Salukis.
"On the women's side, there are some swimmers we're going to count on for depth in the conference season," Walker said. "Those women swam well, even better than some of our other meets. That will bode well for us when we go to the conference meet."
The Salukis are back in action in early January, hosting three straight meets. The women will compete in a dual with Illinois on Jan. 16, and both the men's and women's teams will compete in a dual with Washington (Mo.) on Jan. 21.
