SCOUTING NORTHERN IOWA
The MVC-leading Panthers come to Carbondale on an 11-game win streak, having most recently swept Drake and Creighton last Week in Cedar Falls. Juniors Jacqui Kalin and K.K. Armstrong led four players in double figures with 15 points apiece in a 60-52 win over the Bluejays last Thursday while senior Lizzie Boeck (13 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Rachel Madrigal (13 points, 11 rebounds) both posted double-doubles. Kalin posted another 15 points in a 74-55 win over the Bulldogs Saturday while Madrigal had 14 and junior guard Katelin Oney chipped in 11. Kalin ranks third in the MVC with an average of 15.4 points per game while Boeck ranks fifth in the league in scoring and third in rebounding with averages of 13.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
SERIES WITH NORTHERN IOWA
SIU leads the all-time series between the two teams 30-24, but the Panthers have won three straight in the series.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
SIU stuck with UNI through the first 15 minutes, but couldn't sustain the strong start in a 79-39 loss to the Panthers Jan. 23 in Cedar Falls. Southern never held a lead in the game, but the Salukis kept the margin within six throughout much of the first half. UNI went on a 12-0 run during the last five minutes of the first half, and SIU never seriously challenged the lead again. Katrina Swingler led the Salukis with 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
STRONG FIRST HALF LEADS EVANSVILLE PAST SALUKIS
Southern tied a season low with 13 first-half points and couldn't recover in the second half of a 59-45 loss to Evansville Saturday at SIU Arena. The Salukis outscored the Purple Aces 32-30 in the second half, but a 16-point halftime deficit proved insurmountable. Teri Oliver led SIU with nine points while Katrina Swingler added eight points and 10 rebounds.
A TROUBLING TURNAROUND
SIU was able to hang its hat on rebounding and defense early in the season, but the Salukis have taken hits on both of those categories since the start of MVC play. Southern out-rebounded its opponents by an average of 0.5 rebounds per game and held opponents to an average of 64.4 points per game in non-conference play. Since starting its MVC slate, however, the Salukis have been out-rebounded by 6.4 rebounds per game and have surrendered an average of 71.0 points per game.
OLIVER FOR THREE
Teri Oliver's three made 3-pointers against Evansville brought her up to 50 for the season, which ties her for ninth in program history. Oliver's 74 treys last season ranks third in school history. Her career total of 124 threes already ranks fourth in school history with two full seasons remaining for the sophomore. Oliver launched 15 3-pointers Jan. 29 against Indiana State, which matched a career high she set in the Salukis' season opener against UT Martin. The mark ties the seventh-highest single-game total in school history. Oliver's 158 3-point attempts so far this season ranks seventh in school history and her 384 career attempts ranks fourth in program annals. Her 226 attempts last season ranks second in school history.
