CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois football team raised more than $3,900 for the Good Samaritan Ministries Homeless Shelter on Feb. 5, the day before the Super Bowl.
The Salukis have been participating in this event for the past decade, as it has become a major foundation for the football program and the community.
"This event showcased the passion of this community for helping people during tough times," said Jeff Jones, SIU's Coordinator of Academic Support. "The Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter will be able to house and provide food for more citizens because of the efforts of the football student-athletes and the donations of this community."
The passion of the community and the commitment from the student-athletes is what made this years event so successful. Every student-athlete on the football team donated two hours of their time to raise money at local grocery stores. The money raised will be used to help provide rooms and food for local homeless citizens.
