COLUMBIA, S.C. - Tyler Webb allowed just four hits and no runs in 7.1 innings as No. 7 South Carolina shutout the Southern Illinois baseball team, 4-0, Sunday at Carolina Stadium.
This is the first time the Salukis have been shutout since May 12, 2009 at Saint Louis, which was by the same 4-0 score. SIU falls to 2-4 on the year while the Gamecocks improve to 5-0. The short one-hour, 51-minute game was played in front of a crowd of 7,911.
Webb tied his career-high with seven strikeouts and he walked just one in the game to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Salukis tallied only five hits Saturday, while South Carolina had seven. Southern Illinois struck out 11 times in the game and now have 24 strikeouts in the series.
Sophomore Cody Forsythe pitched a very strong game for the Salukis, but drew the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year. He pitched a complete game and set a new career-high with six strikeouts.
Junior outfielder Jordan Sivertsen went 2-for-3 with a double, which was his fourth in the last five games. He and Donny Duschinsky, who was 2-for-4, were the only Salukis with multiple hits in the game.
The Gamecocks were led at the plate by leadoff hitter Adam Matthew, who was 2-for-4 and scored two of USC's four runs. Jake Williams had two RBIs in the game.
Jackie Bradley Jr. gave South Carolina a 1-0 lead with his RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first.
Forsythe got himself into trouble in the third when he gave up a bunt single, hit a batter and walked one to load the bases with one out. Williams was able to bring home two runs with his single to right, extending USC's lead to 3-0.
That Gamecock lead went up to 4-0 in the fifth when Adrian Morales brought home Bradley Jr. on a sacrifice fly.
Meanwhile, Southern Illinois had only three hits through the first seven innings and Webb had retired 16 of 17 batters from the end of the second through the sixth. The one hit in that time was Sivertsen's double.
Southern's offense remained quiet in the final innings and failed to get on the scoreboard for the first time in its last 69 games.
