CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois handled Evansville in its last dual meet of the season Saturday afternoon, as the women posted a 133-100 victory and the men came out on top, 157-68.
The Saluki women finish the regular season 2-0 in Missouri Valley Conference duals, while the men wrap up at 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The two victories also improve SIU head coach Rick Walker's all-time record against Evansville to 33-0.
Prior to the meet, SIU's four seniors, Tony Bousquet, Seyi Fatayi-Williams, Kyle Riekena and Marcela Teixeira were honored.
Southern swam strong times across the board, using the meet as preparation for the upcoming conference championships. Kirsten Groome swam season-best times in both the 1000 free (10:11.55) and the 500 Free (4:56.68), while Jill Weckbach and Matt Parsons both took first place in the 200 free.
Luisa Silveira took top honors in the 50 free for the women, and the trio of El Badrawi, Juan Arbelaez Osorio and Jared Bradd finished in the top three spots for the men.
Isabela Castro notched a first-place finish in her first 200 IM this season with a time of 2:09.71. Cesar Perez and Steve Wood had solid performances on the men's side, finishing with the top two times.
In the women's 1-meter dive, Michelle Bell was edged out of first place by Sadie Wells by less than one point, still posting her best score all year at 259.27. Brittany Weigel just missed second-place in the 3-meter with a score of 253.35, also a personal best.
Justin Ruszkowski continued to dominate the men's diving events, coming away with a season-high score of 311.55 in the 1-meter and 320.25 in the 3-meter.
Castro and Parsons collected their second individual victories on the day in the 100 fly while Weckbach and Badrawi did the same in the 100 free. Kristin Geppert and Fatayi-Williams swam top times in the 100 breast to finish the individual races.
SIU's relay teams also dominated the competition in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay, fine-tuning their performances before the conference meets.
The Southern Illinois women's team will now compete in the State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Championship Feb. 17-19, and the men's team will be a part of the Mid-American Conference Championship March 3-5. Both events are hosted by Southern Illinois University and will take place at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
