CARBONDALE, Ill. - Without any consistent offense, the Southern Illinois softball team dropped opening games of the Saluki Invitational to DePaul 3-0 and Illinois-Chicago 11-3, in five innings.
"I think the effort was there and that game (against UIC) was kind of a heartbreaker but they are a good team and give credit to them, they hit the ball really well," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
In game one, the Salukis and Blue Demons were locked in a scoreless game until the top of the sixth when a RBI single put the first run of the game on the board.
DePaul would pound out six hits in the final two innings to seal the victory 3-0 in the first shutout of the season offensively for the Salukis.
Danielle Glosson picked up the loss for the Salukis as she struck out six and moved to 6-4 on the season.
Southern (12-7) saw three hits in the effort, all singles, by Mallory Duran, Cristina Trapani, and Haley Gorman.
Hopes of a turn around in game two were foiled as the Flames came out hot offensively scoring four runs in the first inning including back-to-back home runs from Coryn Schmit and Ashley Hewett to lead them to victory 11-3 in five innings.
SIU made it interesting in the fourth, as they scored three runs off three hits led by Haley Gorman's single to advance Morgan Barchan to second to start the inning.
Cristina Trapani followed with an RBI single of her own and Michelle Bradley also drove in a RBI single to put some life in the Salukis' bats, but that wasn't enough to stop a six-run fourth inning for the Flames that led to their run-ruled victory.
"We have to try and get better everyday, we are consistent at the top right now and we've got to get some other people hitting the ball," Blaylock said.
The Salukis are back in action tomorrow as they repeat competition against DePaul and Illinois-Chicago beginning with a matchup against the Flames at 12 p.m.
