CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois bounced back in game one of Sunday's matchups by defeating Illinois-Chicago but couldn't repeat in the tournament finale against DePaul to split on day two of the Saluki Invitational.
Opening the day with a 5-0 victory over the Flames was what the Dawgs needed after falling victim to them in a 11-3 run-rule loss on Saturday but a slow offensive start plagued the team against DePaul as they fell 5-4.
"We two-hit UIC and in the DePaul game I wish we could have come out earlier offensively, they put up a lot of zeros in the first five innings and then we got going," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "I hope we have learned a lesson that we can always battle back."
The Salukis (13-8) avenged yesterday's loss to UIC in game one, where they knocked out eight hits including 2-for-3 performances from Mallory Duran, Morgan Barchan, and Cristina Trapani.
Back-to-back scoring innings in the third and fourth helped the Salukis shutout the Flames (6-12), as Danielle Glosson pitched her fourth shutout and eighth win on the season.
Blaylock credited the effort of the pitching staff, which set the tone for the team on Sunday.
"We came out ready to play and you can tell when you do good things on the mound it kind of translates over (to your offense)," Blaylock said.
In the third, Morgan Barchan had an RBI triple to help kick start the Salukis' offense followed by back-to-back singles by Haley Gorman and Trapani while capitalizing on a UIC error to score three runs in the inning.
Trapani would also come up with a two RBI single in the fourth to give the Salukis extra insurance in the victory.
The Flames had no answer offensively for the Dawgs, as they recorded just two hits in the effort.
Looking to repeat its winning ways in game two, SIU fell behind for most of the game and a seventh inning rally came up short as it fell 11-3 to DePaul, who went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend.
The Blue Demons (15-2) held the Salukis scoreless until the sixth, when Taylor Orsburn launched her fourth long ball of the season, a two run shot, to help bring life to the Saluki bats.
The Salukis would rally in the seventh as pinch hitter Alicia Junker got things going at the start of the inning with a single.
Duran would get on base with a double and Barchan would drive in two RBIs off a single to come within one run, but couldn't pull it off in the end as the Salukis fell 5-4, and going 1-3 at the Saluki Invitational.
The Salukis are back in action at Charlotte West Stadium on Tuesday as they host sister school SIU-Edwardsville in a single game beginning at 4 p.m.
