JACKSON, Tenn. - Southern Illinois picked up its highest finish of the spring season thus far on Tuesday, capturing fourth place overall at the Grover Page Classic hosted by UT Martin.
The Salukis were tied for third with Tennessee Tech after the second round of 18-holes at 589, but couldn't keep pace at the end, finishing three strokes behind. SIU carded a team total 888 while Tennessee Tech finished at 885.
Led by individual medalist Cameron Carrico who shot a third-round 69, Murray State took the team title with a score of 862.
David Griffin (74-74-74) and Jeff Miller (73-73-76) paced the Salukis on the second day of competition as they finished in a lock for 14th place at 222.
After being tied for 50th after the second round, Jake Erickson fought back to post a team-low 71 in the final round to finish in a tie for 26th place with a combined 225.
Brandon Cauldwell and George Tate completed SIU's lineup and separated themselves by just one stroke. Cauldwell finished in a tie for 28th (226) and Tate finished tied for 34th (227).
As an individual, Richie Williams shot his best score of the tournament in the final round, his mark of 76 putting him in 49th out of 83.
"This was really a good tournament for us," said SIU head coach Leroy Newton. "We were able to overcome the rain and finish strong, which is something we have been struggling with lately. We had contributions from everyone on the team, and Jake (Erickson) came through with a big final round. As a team we showed great improvement on a great golf course."
Southern has a few weeks off before it returns to competition April 4-5, traveling to Hollister, Mo. for the Branson Creek Invitational.
