SERIES WITH WICHITA STATE
SIU leads the all-time series between the two teams 35-24.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The Salukis turned the ball over 27 times and struggled to find open looks against the Shockers defense in a 76-53 loss Jan. 2 in Wichita. Southern out-rebounded WSU, shot for a better percentage from the field and made more free throws, but the Shockers launched 31 more shots and netted 11 more field goals. Teri Oliver led SIU with 16 points while CiCi Shannon scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Haleigh Lankester and Michelle Price both scored 15 to lead the Shockers.
SECOND-HALF SURGE LIFTS REDBIRDS PAST SALUKIS
The Salukis kept pace with Illinois State through the first 28 minutes, but fell apart in the final 12 of an 87-62 loss to the Redbirds. Southern trailed just four points eight minutes into the second half , but ISU went on a 20-2 run over the next six and-a-half minutes to put the game out of reach. Katrina Swingler led SIU with 18 points and seven rebounds while Teri Oliver had 17 points and Brooke LeMar added 11.
FAMILIAR FACES
Wichita State head coach Jody Adams was a associate head coach at Southern Illinois from 2004-07, while Shocker assistant coach Carlai Moore is a former Saluki player (2005-07). Both were part of Southern's MVC Championship season in 2006-07. Moore was a two-time All-MVC selection at Southern and was named the league's newcomer of the year in 2005-06.
DROPPING DIMES
Freshman point guard Brooke LeMar dished out 10 assists Friday at Indiana State, marking the first double-digit assists game of her career. LeMar, who ranks second in the MVC in assists per game, has averaged 5.7 assists over the past six games. With 127 assists to date, LeMar needs just three more to enter the top 10 in SIU history for assists in a season.
SWING IT ON
Senior forward Katria Swingler is making her final games as a Saluki count. The Teutopolis, Ill., native, who played in her 110th game for SIU Sunday at Illinois State, has averaged 10.3 points and 7.9 rebounds over Southern's last seven games. Those marks are two points and two rebounds above her season averages. She scored a season-high 18 points against the Redbirds and has pulled down 10 rebounds in four out of the last seven games.
FREE THROW FRENZY
Indiana State went 38-for-52 from the charity stripe against the Salukis Friday, marking the most free throws ever attempted and made against SIU. Previously the most free throws attempted against the Salukis was 41 by Creighton in 1995 and the most free throws made was 30 by Eastern Illinois in 1989.
