EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team rebounded from Saturday's loss to Wichita State with a 6-1 non-conference win over SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday.
Jorge Cavero and Adam Fabik both improved to 11-2 in singles, besting SIUE's Devan Faulkenberg 6-1, 6-1, and Paulo Gonzalez 7-6, 6-4, at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively. Cavero has a four-match winning streak, and since his move to No. 2 singles he is 3-0.
Also notching singles wins for the Salukis were Orhan Spahic at No. 4 (6-4, 6-4) and freshmen Rafael Cuadrillero at No. 5 (6-4, 6-1) and Carlos Do Val at No. 3 (6-4, 7-5, 1-0 (17-15)). Do Val's win snapped a five-match losing streak.
In doubles, SIU took two of the three matches for the point. Jordan Snyder and Spahic defeated SIUE's Michael Chamberlain and Morten Christensen, 8-5, at No. 2. At No. 3, the freshman tandem of Fabik and Cuadrillero topped the Cougar duo of Jacob Tanulanond and Ryan Vogt, 8-6.
"We tried a new doubles lineup and it may still be a work in progress," said head coach Dann Nelson. "We were able to get playing time for some of our guys who really needed it. I am happy that we won and we now can focus primarily on conference matches."
The Salukis return to conference play this weekend when they will host Creighton and Drake.
