TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The SIU softball team extended its win streak to eight games with a series sweep of Indiana State on Sunday.
The Salukis (27-12, 10-2 MVC) and Sycamores (14-23, 3-11 MVC) concluded the series with a doubleheader after weather forced game two of Saturday's scheduled twin bill to be pushed back.
Hits were plentiful in the series, as the Salukis' bats broke loose for 36 hits and 36 runs over three games, as every Saluki who saw action at the plate had at least one hit and some broke individual game-records along the way.
"Offensively we came to play and its kind of good I'm a firm believer in certain parts of the game and on certain days that one area maybe stronger than another and this weekend the offense picked it up and really came to play," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Cristina Trapani and Michelle Bradley tied a single game-record for home runs with two in a game and Morgan Barchan's five hits in series finale tied a record that was last recorded almost 15 years to the date.
.Game One: SIU 8, Indiana State 5
A six-run third inning propelled Southern Illinois to victory over the Sycamores in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
The game entered the third inning in a 1-1 tie as Taylor Orsburn hit a two RBI double followed by a wild pitch scoring pinch runner Kelsea Ashton.
Chelsea Held, who contributed a 2-for-4 performance from the plate, had a RBI single while Sydney Shelton fired off a two RBI double and a Morgan Barchan sacrifice fly rounded out the scoring in the inning for the Salukis.
They Sycamores attempted to make a comeback in the seventh, as they scored three runs but Danielle Glosson came in relief of starting pitcher Alex Peters and earned her fourth save of the season.
Jayna Spivey went 2-for-2 while Mallory Duran chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI as SIU had 13 hits in the game.
Peters was credited with the victory as she struck out six for and moved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 MVC play.
Game Two: SIU 12, Indiana State 7
The conclusion of the series wouldn't have been complete without another wild game as the Salukis exploded for 16 hits to complete the three game sweep of the Sycamores.
The Salukis took the Sycamore pitching staff for 11 earned runs and had an outstanding performance from Barchan as she tied a single game record with five hits in the game as she went a 5-for-5 in the game.
The last time a Saluki recorded five hits in a single game was on April 27, 1996 as Jen Feldmeier had five hits against Creighton.
Blaylock credited the sophomore outfielder with her focus and consistency at the plate, especially as of late.
"The thing about Morgan is when she's steady and sees pitches, she does a great job and she is really confident at the plate and it shows," Blaylock said.
Cristina Trapani achieved a single-game record of her own as she blasted two home runs, both two run shots, in the game.
Trapani and Michelle Bradley, who hit two home runs in Saturday's game, both tied a single-game record for home runs, which was last done by Katie Wagner in 2008.
It was another back and forth battle, as the Salukis took an early 3-0 lead off Trapani's first home run and a Barchan RBI single but the Sycamores answered back with two runs in the third cutting the Salukis lead to one.
The Salukis took the top of the fourth to score three runs to go ahead 6-2 but Indiana State wasn't ready to let go, as it used a big fifth inning to score five runs in what looked like all the effort it needed to go ahead.
But the Salukis remained resilient, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh as Trapani launched her second home run of the day and went 2-for-5 in the game at the plate.
Four Salukis had multiple hits in the game including Trapani, Barchan, Duran - who was 3-for-4 with two doubles - and Orsburn who was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day.
Blaylock said the team talked about getting on a rhythm where they could win consecutive games and are doing a great job of putting that together as of lately.
"We went through a stretch where we said `Let's try to roll and win several games in a row' and we've done that and I hope that continues on Tuesday," Blaylock said.
Glosson picked up her sixth straight win as she moved to 17-8 overall and 6-2 in MVC action as she recorded five strikeouts and walked just one in her 21st complete game of the season.
The Salukis will return to Charlotte West Stadium on Tuesday as they face SIU-Edwardsville in a rescheduled game that was postponed due to weather back on March 15. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
