CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Southern Illinois softball team split with Northern Iowa in a Saturday doubleheader by dropping game one 1-0 in extra innings, but regaining momentum with 6-2 win in game two.
"I thought it was two great softball games with great pitching and defense by both teams today," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "We attacked early and often in the second game and had a really great pitching performance (by Alex Peters)."
The Salukis improved to 19-11 overall and 4-1 in Missouri Valley Confernce play.
Game One: UNI 1, SIU 0 (8 innings)
The Panthers and Salukis needed extra innings to complete a quiet game one, as the Salukis fell 1-0 in eight innings.
Just four hits were recorded in the game as it was a pitcher's duel threw three innings before Mallory Duran laid down the only Saluki hit, a single, in the fourth.
UNI picked up three hits in the effort including two in the eighth inning as it got the game winning double from Samantha Reimer.
Danielle Glosson (11-7) threw four hitless innings in the loss and moved to 3-1 in MVC play.
Game two: SIU 6, UNI 2
The Salukis recovered in game two as Alex Peters threw a complete game in a 4-2 victory.
Cristina Trapani started things off for the Dawgs with a first inning RBI double and got an RBI single from Syndey Shelton and sacrifice RBI from Natalee Weissinger in the second as the Salukis scored early and never looked back.
Haley Gorman provided a much needed spark to the Saluki offense, adding a 2-for-4 performance including a RBI triple in the fifth and RBI double in the seventh. Blaylock emphasized the importance of the top the line up, which accounted for six of the Salukis ten hits on the day.
"Our 1-4 hitters were pretty consistent all day and we told them that when you go on the road in the Valley you've got to be prepared to play every game and we still have the opportunity to win the series in the finale tomorrow," Blaylock said.
Peters improved to 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in MVC play as she threw seven strikeouts on the afternoon.
The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow in a single game beginning at noon at Robinson-Dresser Field.
