Trio takes event titles on day one of Vanderbilt Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Kim Fortney, Megan Hoelscher and Jeneva McCall each took event titles for Southern Illinois Friday as the team opened competition at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
In all, the Salukis combined for 13 top five finishes on the first day, including wins in three of the seven women's events completed thus far.
SIU began the day by taking three of the top four spots in the women's javelin, including Fortney in first with a mark of 132-04. Following in second was Toni Whitfield with a toss of 126-08, while Jessica Vermeulen took fourth at 118-06.
McCall made it two for SIU by winning the shot put at personal best distance of 54-05.25. The junior was not alone in the top six, though, as Gwen Berry (second - 53-02.25), Fortney (fourth - 49-08.50) and Rickael Roach (sixth - 46-06.75) keyed the Saluki dominance.
The third title came courtesy of Megan Hoelscher, who claimed the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:40.81.
Meanwhile, the men's team earned six top five finishes Friday, including two second place finishes. The first came from Jason Seaman, who earned silver in the men's shot put at 54-01.00. Lucas Cherry also took second in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:25.78.
Tim Robberstad finished third place in the pole vault, while J.C. Lambert and T.J. Heffernan were fourth in the shot put and 1500m, respectively. Additionally, Brandon Deloney took fifth in the 200m.
The action continues in the Music City Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw.
