Softball falls to Illinois State in bottom of the seventh

Normal, Ill. - Early home runs couldn't save the SIU softball team from a come from behind win from Illinois State as it fell 5-4 in the Sunday series finale.
The Redbirds (33-15, 19-4 MVC) rallied on their Senior day in the seventh to score three runs off three hits, including a Liz Andrews single that stole the win and the series from the Salukis (33-15, 15-5 MVC).
"They (Illinois State) are a great hitting team and its hugely disappointing tough loss but we still have a ton to play for and we have to get our minds right for next weekend (against Drake)," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Mallory Duran went 2-for-2 with two runs scored including a solo home run in the third. Her two runs puts her in sole possession of the single season runs scored record that was previously held by Becky Lis who scored 50 in 1997.
The Salukis came out hot both on offense and defense that was sparked from a first inning three run home run from Taylor Orsburn, who moved up into a tie for second place in single season RBIs with her 44th, 45th, and 46th of the season.
Orsburn's home run is also her ninth of the season, moving her into a tie for tenth in single season home runs.
Duran followed in the third after the Redbirds answered with two runs in the second, as she connected for her fourth home run of the season.
"Offensively we did a great job of getting on top right away and setting the tone," Blaylock said.
The game went into a standstill until the bottom of the seventh when the Redbirds ignited their comeback rally.
The Salukis had eight hits in the game coming from Morgan Barchan, Haley Gorman, Cristina Trapani, and Jayna Spivey who all had one apiece.
Pitcher Danielle Glosson picked up the loss, snapping her 11 game win streak, as she fell to 22-9 on the season and 10-3 in MVC.
SIU will wrap up its regular season schedule as it host Drake Saturday and Sunday for Senior day and the make up for Strike Out Cancer.
