SAINT LOUIS, Mo. -- Southern Illinois sophomore golfer Jake Erickson has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, the league announced Tuesday.
Erickson was one of just two returners to the Saluki lineup this season, consistently providing Southern with the experience it needed especially in the conference tournament.
The Springfield, Ill. native maintains a 3.64 GPA in business finance and competed in 11 events for SIU this year. His best finish came when he tied for sixth place out of 49 at the SIUE Intercollegiate back on October 26. Erickson's 76.6 season stroke average was fourth-best on the team, and he posted five finishes inside the top-20 throughout the year.
The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Capital One Academic All-America® program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's rounds or played at the State Farm MVC Championship.
