CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois women's basketball signee Cartaesha Macklin has been named to the prestigious PARADE All-America High School Girls Basketball Team as announced in Sunday's edition of the magazine.
The 2011 PARADE All-America team features the top 40 high school seniors nationwide as compiled by PARADE and The Sporting News. Macklin, a 5-foot-7 guard from Lafayette High School in Mayo, Fla., is the only Missouri Valley Conference signee to make the list and one of only 12 signees from schools in non-BCS conferences. She is the first signee in school history to earn the honor.
"This is a very prestigious award. To be among this elite group of players is an amazing achievement. It is a testament to her year and her outstanding career," said SIU head coach Missy Tiber. "We are so excited to have Cartaesha as part of our Saluki women's basketball team, and I cannot wait to have the opportunity to coach this young lady."
Macklin averaged 29.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game during her senior season, leading the Hornets to the Florida Class 2A state championship semifinals. She broke her school's single-season scoring record with 849 points in 2010-11, bringing her career scoring total to 2,556 points.
Her efforts earned her the title of Florida Dairy Farmers' Class 2A Player of the Year and she finished third in the voting for Florida's Miss Basketball. She was named First-Team All-State all four years of high school, having led Lafayette to the state tournament three out of her four years.
The 2011 NCAA Women's Sweet Sixteen featured 35 former PARADE All-Americans, and 61 PARADE All-Americans played in the WNBA in 2010.
