Baseball wins at Indiana State to close out regular season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Austin Montgomery drove in a career-high four runs and Andrew Bever recorded his first career Missouri Valley Conference victory to lead the Southern Illinois baseball team to a 9-7 win at Indiana State Saturday in the final game of the regular season.
SIU heads into next week's MVC Tournament as the No. 5 seed with a 22-32 overall record. The Salukis finish the year 11-10 in the Valley after taking 2-of-3 games from the Sycamores (26-26, 8-13).
Bever (5-5) lasted five innings and tied his career-high with six strikeouts in the second MVC start of his career. He allowed four hits, one run and walked three batters.
Southern Illinois led 9-2 after Brock Harding's first career home run in the top of the seventh. The Saluki bullpen then allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh and three in the eighth to cut that lead down to two runs.
However, after Todd Eaton came in to stop the bleeding in the eighth. Tyler Dray threw a scoreless ninth to record his eighth save of the season, which is the second most in a season by a freshman in Saluki history.
Southern's bullpen gave up 10 of Indiana State's 14 hits in the game and six runs.
Montgomery drove in his four runs off of two hits and three of his RBIs came in the big second inning when his double to the gap in right-center cleared the bases that were loaded.
SIU finished with 11 hits in the game. Chris Murphy and Nick Johnson along with Montgomery all had two hits in the game. Harding's homer was a two-run shot down the right-field line and Murphy also drove in two runs with his bases-loaded single in the second.
