CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A pair of Southern Illinois track and field athletes fell just short of qualifying for the IAAF World Championships in the hammer throw during the USA Track and Field Championships Saturday in Eugene, Ore.
Saluki thrower Jeneva McCall finished fourth, one spot out of the World Championship qualifying spot, while recent SIU graduate Gwen Berry took sixth.
McCall recorded a throw of 221-4 (67.48m) on her second-to-last attempt in the final to pull into third, but was ousted from the top three as Amber Campbell pulled ahead on her final throw.
Berry's throw of 218-7 (66.63m) on her third attempt of the competition earned her a spot in the finals, but she couldn't improve upon it in her last three throws.
