Women's Basketball adds Stephanie Butler, Terry Nooner to staff

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois women's basketball coach Missy Tiber announced today the hiring of Stephanie Butler and Terry Nooner as assistants on her coaching staff.
"Stephanie and Terry will assist in all day to day operations of our program," Tiber said. "Having the opportunity to spend some time with them, I am extremely pleased with the excitement level and knowledge of the game that they will bring. I feel a real sense of loyalty and commitment level to our staff and our program."
Butler comes to SIU with 11 years experience coaching at the high school and college level. Most recently, Butler served as the head girls basketball coach at Butler High School in Matthews, N.C., where she led the Bulldogs to a combined 121-26 record from 2006-10, including a 2010 North Carolina Class 4A state championship.
At BHS, Butler was named Southewestern 4A Conference coach of the year three times (2006, 08, 09), as the Bulldogs won the regular season conference title in 2008 and 2009 and took the conference tournament title all five years during her tenure. She coached three McDonald's All-America nominees at Butler, including McDonald's All-American and 2011 Tennessee signee Cierra Burdick.
Prior to her tenure at BHS, Butler served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant camp director at Division II Lander University for one season after serving two seasons as the assistant women's basketball coach and camp director at Division I Presbyterian College.
Butler had previous high school coaching stints at Gaffney High School in Gaffney, S.C. (2001-02), Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C. (1999-2001), and Westside High School in Anderson, S.C. (1998-99). She has also spent 11 years as a physical education teacher.
A native of Seneca, S.C., Butler was a four-year starting point guard and two-year captain at Southern Wesleyan University from 1994-98. She earned her bachelor's in physical education from SWU in 1998 and is pursuing a master's in executive leadership through Gardener-Webb University.
"Stephanie is a championship level coach. She is a tireless worker and is willing to work to help make our program successful," Tiber said. "Her many years of experience in coaching young women both at the high school and college level will be a tremendous asset to our program. Stephanie has many connections in the south that will assist in our recruiting and she is widely known as an excellent floor coach."
Nooner comes to Carbondale with seven years experience coaching high school and AAU basketball in addition to seven years experience as a basketball instructor in the Kansas City, Mo., area.
The Kansas City native has coached the girls 13U and 15U teams for the Lady Phenom AAU organization since 2007 and previously coached the Earl Watson KC Bruins 17U boys team in 2006. Nooner also coached boys basketball at Southeast High School (2002-03, 2007-08) and Raytown High School (2008-09) during his six-years of teaching special education at the two schools.
In addition, Nooner has served as president of KC Pro Am Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides basketball instruction, since 2007, and has served as a personal basketball instructor at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City since 2006. He has been involved in training NBA players Chauncey Billups, Tyronn Lue and Billy Thomas as well as several college players.
Nooner was a four-year player at the University of Kansas, where he was the team captain during his senior season in 1999-2000. He holds two degrees from KU, including a bachelor's degree in African and African American Studies (2000) and a master's in sport administration (2002). Nooner has also completed credits toward a master's in special education from the University of Missouri Kansas City.
"Terry understands the work ethic it takes to succeed at the highest level. He was the epitome of a student-athlete under Roy Williams at Kansas. He has great character and will be an excellent mentor and role model to the young women in our program," Tiber said. "Terry's outgoing personality will also allow for him to be an excellent recruiter. Terry will also work daily with our post players."
